AI personas for testing

"Can AI test my app for me?"

Yes, and this is one of the best uses of AI for solo builders. It works best in two layers.

Layer one — AI as test designer

Describe your app to Claude or ChatGPT and ask it to generate personas representing your real users. For example:

  • A 72-year-old retiree who's never used AI and is mildly suspicious of it
  • A 10-year-old who wants to make jokes
  • A 45-year-old professional who tried ChatGPT once and got frustrated
  • A non-native English speaker
  • Someone with shaky hands using a tablet

Then ask the AI to walk through each module *as that persona* and write down where they'd get confused, give up, or misinterpret instructions. You'll get a thorough qualitative review in minutes.

Layer two — AI as test executor

More advanced, but powerful. Tools like Browserbase, Playwright with AI, or Anthropic's Claude with computer use can actually click through your app like a user would. You describe a persona and a goal; the AI navigates, reports what happened, and screenshots anything that looks wrong.

Honest caveats

  • AI personas are great at logic gaps, confusing copy, missing instructions. They're less good at *emotional* reactions — the "this feels condescending" or "this made me feel dumb" responses. For an app aimed at nervous beginners, those signals matter enormously.
  • AI personas tend to be more patient and competent than real beginners. A real 72-year-old might not realize a button is clickable, or might close the new tab by accident and not know how to get back.

A practical sequence

Run AI persona walkthroughs after each module → fix what they find → one round of real human testing before launch. That combination is more thorough than what most professional teams do.
